Watched about 10 minutes of the (rebroadcast of the) Big 33 Game.

Was happy to see PA do so well - heard Zordich (on offense) and Wedderburn mentioned a few times and managed to catch interview with Mike Zordich (Papa) - which was cool.

will (if I can get myself organized) be heading up to State College this week- if I see Jay pa at any political rallies or bocce ball tournaments- I'll tell him y'all say "hey".

Are you Going to the Oregon State game?

If you are - do you plan to tailgate with us?

If so - check out the snap poll created by the Tailgating Coordinator here.

If the third selection shows up as (it did on my computer) "I don" - let's assume that it means "I don't know"

NOT "I don a Dorothy costume every Thursday night and skip around the living room chanting 'follow the yellow brick road - follow the yellow brick road!'"

and

NOT "I don take you keith to be my now lawfully wedded husband"

and

NOT "I don am a Celtic goddess; mother of Gwydion and Arianrhod"

okay?

Blue White 2008 - Newsletter

Okay - I know that it's 2 months later - but hey - the TC likes to spread things out so we all have something to look forward to during the off-season -

So here it is - Blue White Weekend recap - per the Tailgating Coordinator:

Official quote:

"This isn't my first time"

It was yet another great sunny blue white weekend for 2008. One can only conclude that our beer master "Duck" brought the sun shine with him from Florida.

Thursday

The weekend started with extensive travel for many of the diesel tailgaters. Duck left Florida for DC on Thursday morning, where he met up with Jessi and her sister Caitlyn for a 4 hour drive to State College. Caitlyn will be off the market in just a few weeks. All the girl tailgaters celebrated with her on Friday for little back dress night (LBDN).

Team Tennessee left Knoxville on Thursday night drove late in to the night. We caught a few winks in the truck and arrived in state collage at about noon and ready to start drinking. Of course, Team CT arrived late Thursday and hit the Darkhorse for Yuengs and wings. It is almost unbelievable that Johnny managed to deliver the yet-unnamed-penn-state-camper without any catastrophes. He did tell me about a close call where the wind coming off a big rig almost tossed his little shortbed and the camper into the ditch while coming around a bend on I-80, just one more reason to get a super duty.

Friday

Redneck Chad, back for this second time after a two years hiatus, met us at the cafe. The weather was warm and there were "skirts and tank tops as far as the eye can see". Team Vinyard made a late arrival to round out the all the big players. Cafe teas were not the only drink of choice this Friday. The miller lite girls and friends tuned us on the fantastic Miami vice (half pina colada, half dacori). I must say that they were the best table neighbors. The Big D gave up our second table to them early in the day because our crowd was lagging behind. He didn't sell out cheap, because they hooked them up with a round beer only to be repeated several time as we rotated in and out of the cafe all day. We also ran in to Denise at the cafe where she also greeted us with a round of shots.

Team TN headed back to our host location (Casa da la Jeremy) to get cleaned up for LBDN. Jessi and Girls got ready quickly at the IMI and headed to the Rathskellar. The pre-party at Jeremy's was roaring. His out of town guests were getting in the spirit of the weekend. With the night all ready in progress and no cabs to be found, Kevin picked our drunk-asses up (all 7 of us) in his friend's Pontiac G6. Ask Big Will to describe what happened to Redneck Chad at this point. We meet up with the LBDN crowd at the saloon. Velveeta was playing and monkey boy was flowing. The girls pushed their way up to the stage to dance and celebrate Caitlyn's last Penn State weekend as a batchorlette. No specify details were remembered, therefore, it was must have been a good time.

Saturday

Saturday morning started with enthusiasm. The gang again met up at Nittany Lion Inn at what should have been 7:30 but was closer to 8am and headed to Beaver Stadium. The bitter nasty parking Gestapo forced us to park several rows back for our traditional BWW spot, however we were still directly in line with the water tower. This separated us from Smitty and Al, who were parked in anticipation of witnessed our antics from a safe distance. Set up began and all 6 flagpoles were up in moments and breakfast was on the grill. Redneck Chad, our breakfast guy, blessed us with eggs, bacon, freedom toast sticks and much more. Duck was all ready "passing out little bits of happiness" as team TN whipped up some good ole biscuits and sausage gravy on the grill (just like the cowboys make 'em). Suz also made some stuffin' muffins for hungry tailgaters.

Some highlights from the day:

We had a record number of flag poles. Matt got a new aluminum flagpole for Christmas. It was so nice, he bought a second for this game.

Team Amazing tailgaters gave our grill master Chris a set of lighted grill tongs as a gift.

We had several first time baby tailgaters. This was the first tailgate for Sean (Dena and Mark's son). He and Lily May (our new puppy) took comfort together as their young eyes were overwhelmed with the busy activities and busy people. We also had a future cheerleader.

Missy and Chris made it to their fist tailgate since graduating over 6 years ago.

Critical Pete and Pittsburg Bob's and crew helped out by bringing more ice.

Vaughn managed to find us again this year and came by minivan. Despite the appearance of his personal beer bong, he was generally well behaved. He even ended up putting more clothes at the end of the day. This is a tailgating first. It must have been because he brought his nephew and family. So now you need to be on the look out for this van.

Kori brought her friends from work to join the fun. And graced us with Meat Muffins

Mad and Suz also joined in the southern cooking theme and made Carolina BBQ sandwiches.

We had plenty of good beverages, including plenty of bombers. There were also plenty of mixed drinks and specialty shots.

Kelly, like a champ, was passing out shots before the game.

In addition to his wheeled game of polish horseshoes, Rich brought sausage and peppers to help feed the masses. Not to be defeated, he changed the names on all the package of rolls to Crusty freedom rolls.

Chris and I both made batches of bacon cheddar burgers, so everyone got one this time.

Big Will was sporting the Penn State embroidered shorts. He takes flair to the next level.

This tailgate had one of the best group photos. Our neighboring RV'ers took a break from sitting in their camper and reading to take our photo from on top of their RV. The photo was very cool: tailgating with out a grill, not so cool.

Carter's regular car was in the shop getting a new engine, but he still cranked out the tunes. Even without his car, we still had great tunes yet again

After the game, Duck made his best Beer can chickens and team Vinyard fired up the deep fryer. One of the newest creations was a jelly donut. It's a deep fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Jamie, following in her big brother Rich's footsteps, hooked the group up with jell-o shots in professional style cups with lids.

Smitty, Heidi, and Al stopped by with their camper before pulling out of beaver stadium, Critical Peter thought their camper was a mobile porta-potty and when he realized it was a personal camper debated jumping out of the bathroom window. (Because they now bringing porta potties to the drunk people?!?). This gave Al good laugh.

We had an early evening dance party with tunes from carter and snapped a late night "stragglers" photo. I got video evidence that Redneck Chad can dance, you just have to play his kind of music and put some THA out there for him.

They were refinishing the baseball field near the stadium and some redneck decided to put all of this extra dirt into a 40 foot tall pile with only an orange snow fence to keep people out. Chad, Chris and I did a late night dirt pile hill climb race. Chris and
Chad got to the top at the same time and left me way behind, only because I was wearing flip flops at the time and decided to do it barefoot. That's why you never go into battle without your armor.

At end of the evening when just I, Carter, Erica and my wife were left, I protested at 10pm that I was going to have a FEW more bombers and go to bed. Carted raised an eye brow to "a few".

Sunday

The few campers that were left in the parking lot awoke to a cloudy morning and the roar of the track vacs sucking up the millions of empties. Luckily, we were able to pack up before the rain started and head on home.

For the Glory,

This the Day your Life will surely Change

Or not -

that's just the song that's currently recycling in my brain. (Yes, it's that darn MnM's commercial - with the creepy "custom" candies walking around like they're people)

Anyway -

PSU cracked the top 10 in the Final Director's Cup standings. A program-best showing in Track and Field boosted the Lions into 9th place overall, with 1041.0 total points.

Georgia, finishing 10th, was (literally) right behind PSU with 1040.0 points.

Stanford claimed its 14th straight title with 1461.0 points. Michigan (the only Big 10 school ahead of PSU) finished 3rd.

Penn State Day on BTN

was fun - I didn't watch all of it (mostly because I already have all of the games recorded) - but I did use it as my "flip" show (even with the DVR, I just don't have the attention span to watch one show for more than 14 minutes).

I saw some basketball (v. MSU and v. Indiana) - and I watched a bit of the Alamo Bowl. I had actually forgotten the poor start for PSU (you see, when I was the recorded version - there's a lot of fast forwarding through those bits) - It was good to see them claw back into it.

Signs it's the off-season: Purchases

During the off-season, I spend a lot of time consoling myself through retail therapy -

Things for the tailgate - PSU clothing - PSU gift items - PSU jewelry, etc - it all helps make the off season a little less horrible.

I've hit the time of year when nearly all purchases are geared toward the football season.

Summer stuff is starting to go on sale -

Every designer, every year, does some sort of "blue" line for outdoor entertaining - and now is when you can pick up some great tailgating accessories at bargain prices.

Also, navy is a summer (spring) color - so I always check the sales to stock up on navy apparel.

This off season I've been a bit more focused than usual - we're planning (in particular) for one super big tailgate (homecoming) this season - it will be (to quote HiMyM) legendary = no really, it's gonna be great. The basement is packed (some say cluttered, I say packed) with decorations, gear, etc -

My random impulse buy of the off season has been a custom stamp for the tailgate (but even that was on sale) - it has a (licensed) chipmunk logo in the middle circled by "2 the Lion Tailgate" and the website address - whoo.

6/12/2008

it's time to talk tailgating

The summer is upon us and it will be football season before we know it!

We've been discussing a variety of themes, foods, recipes, etc - and everyone is getting pretty excited about the upcoming season.

One downer - one that has become an annual pre-season PitA - is the parking map. I can't tell you how agitated I get just looking at the PDF (if you haven't seen it, PINK parking has encroached into lot 13 (surprised? i didn't think so.). My guess is that we'll be hosting the "bigger" tailgates over in the RV lots - I just get so unhappy when I think about all of this.

As you probably know, we used to park in the PINK lot - and it was terrible - we'd get there when the gate (rope) opened - but everyone else would come and go, basically, up to game time. We were always moving the canopy back and forth - so cars could get by. Over 3 seasons we had 2 instances when our car was hit by another tailgater - and another incident when someone just ran over the tailgate, altogether. This doesn't happen in the non-reserved lots (preferred or otherwise) - no one is driving in 60 minutes before kickoff. And of course, when we have a 6+car convoy into the game, one reserved spot wasn't going to do us much good. The non-reserved lots have the problem of space allotment - we want it - the parking attendants sometimes don't want to give it - and periodically there will be a bike cop who walks through reminding us that we must have a "fire lane".

All of the non-reserved lots are, technically, parking lots, not tailgating lots (even though it's more difficult to tailgate there, generally). So if PSU wanted to tell us that we are not allowed to tailgate - they totally could - we already "break the rules" by using canopies in the "parking" lots (irony).

Anyway - BACK TO FUN STUFF -

that is, funny stuff...

we are going to create a ... facebook page - for the tailgate - it makes me a little sick to the stomach - but it's actually a good way to inform the masses about our tailgating plans.

I'll let you know as soon as it goes live - wink.

The List and what RUTS did about it...

As almost everyone knows, there is a "list" floating around the internet, claimed to be a chronicle of PSU's legal woes since 2002.

It is full of misconception and inaccuracy - some of which has angered me greatly.

Well Run up the Score, took on the challenge to research and review the litany - and has posted the results.

Of course there is no excuse for players breaking the law (there's really no excuse for anyone) - the players are ambassadors for the University - not only the football and/or athletic department. However - those who post the "list" aware of its falsehoods are culpable themselves. It's called libel.

Big Ten's Greatest Games

Finally has some PSU (fun to watch) action -

Recently, I've caught bits of different games - PSU v Oregon in the 1995 Rose Bowl - not the most inspiring of games - but fun to see the "old" guys again. I don't know what's more interesting/surprising/sad - the bits (names, plays, etc) I remember - or the ones I forget.

And they (re)aired PSU v Wisconsin, 2002 - I remember this game. I was up in NYC to celebrate a friend's birthday (don't worry - it was @ Wisconsin) - and I had emailed the president of the NYC alumni chapter - to see if people got together to watch games (as they do in Philadelphia) - she said that they do - and gave me in the information - it happened to be a bar really close to the hotel where we were staying. However, when we got there (the pres had mentioned that she probably wouldn't make it that week) - there were no "evident" Penn Staters - so, after a round of drinks, I finally asked the bartender "is this where the Penn staters meet?" - he sighed slightly, said yes - why didn't you mention it earlier?, and went back to the register to adjust our tab - to reflect the special PSU prices - that was cool. So the game finally came on and still, we were the only people really rooting for PSU - a Wisconsin fan happened to be sitting at the bar next to us - Wisconsin fans are good people - at least most of them are - this fella did not possess the mid-western charm (perhaps the big city had changed him) - oh well. As you all remember - The game was pretty exciting - PSU jumped out to a lead - but Wisconsin clawed back... With about 20 (real time) minutes left the bartender informed us that he was going to have to switch the TV over to the Yankees' game - BASEBALL? this is supposed to be the Penn State bar! he reminded us that our v. small group were the only ones watching in a now crowded bar - he said that he would have a TV switched over in dining room - cool - fine - excellent - we walk over to the restaurant area - no PSU - I dash back to the bar - our bartender, who is pretty much swamped, says - give me a minute - we are freaking out - trying to figure out if we can run back to the hotel in time to see the end - but now there are only about 10 minutes left in the game - it would have been really difficult. While I was white hot angry, I hadn't gotten to the abusive stage, yet - the Wisconsin fan let his displeasure be known. After what seemed an eternity - they switched a tv in the dining room to the game - we sat at a table - getting the oddest looks from the patrons and wait staff. We got to see the end of the game and PSU win - we were thrilled! I skipped down to the bar - got the bartender's attention and asked for our bill. He said "I threw it away" - I thought - what the h#$@ does that mean? - he said, "you guys were really cool about having to move and that other kid was a real jerk - so no charge." We had been there for about 4 hours; we ate, we drank - all for free. I asked "can I leave a tip?" he said "sure" - so I left a tip that was about 40% of what the bill would have been (the cash I had on hand). It was an unbelievably great day. Watching the game I recalled the events of that day - but the thing that really struck me was - Paul Posluzsny was still in high school at that time.

Oh, and last night I stayed up to watch PSU v tosu 2001 - 324. Ah memories. Zack was just a freshman and had a healthy shoulder - and not everyone was hip to his wicked play fake superiority. I remember that it was terribly cold (especially for the end of October) - We had some tosu fans as guests at our tailgate - they were long time friends and had been coming to games over the years (plus, I hadn't really developed my distaste for tosu, yet) - they were very gracious during the first half of the game - and then I got to be "nice" to them as the game progressed - ha ha ha. I'll never forget Zack's long run - or how PSU fought their way back into the game - or how the defense stood strong. I'll admit that I had forgotten the "pick six" that put tosu up by 18 - and, strangely, I had forgotten the blocked field goal - PSU was just meant to win that day -

Fun fun. I love watching the old games - it's so funny - I know the outcome - and I often remember the sequence of events -but I still get all riled up - yelping and cheering. good times.

Game Time for Syracuse game announced

GoPSUsports.com reports that the September 13th game at Syracuse will air at 3:30pm (EST).

While Penn State insists that this is just the 5th game time announced - ESPN begs to differ - they list 6 set kickoff times.

All times listed are EST.

09/06 - Oregon State - 3:30pm kickoff (per ESPN & the Oregonian - PSU will figure it out eventually);
09/13 @ Syracuse - 3:30 pm;
09/27 - illinois - 8:00 pm kickoff - annual Oktoberfest tailgate as well;
10/11 @ Wisconsin - 8:00 pm;
10/18 - Michigan - 4:40pm kickoff - PSU homecoming;
10/25 @ tosu - 8:00pm.

While only half of the times announced are for home games - I'm quite glad to not see a 12pm start time yet (although I'm sure we'll get a few).

The Lions' other games each has the potential for being an early start (12:00pm) -

08/30 - Coastal Carolina;
09/20 - Temple;
10/04 @ Purdue*;
11/08 @ Iowa*;
11/15 - Indiana; and
11/22 - msu*.

* possibility of later start.

Penn State, in general, seems to have a difficulty with the earlier start times - on the field, in the stands and in the parking lots.

Don't get me started about the parking lots. There is a lot of crap bubbling under the surface on the parking/tailgating front -
