I'm Memeing of a Great Bowl Season; 2theLion 2013 - 2014 Biased FBS Bowl Picks

So, the first half (ish) of the bowl season hasn't been very biasy. Which is fine. Whatever. But that's not going to stop us from posting the rest of our picks...

Monday, December 30, 2013

Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl
Middle Tennessee (8-4) Blue Raiders vs
Navy (8-4) Midshipmen
Fort Worth, TX
11:45am
ESPN

Even if this weren’t the Armed Forces Bowl, there’d be no question in which way I’d lean - Ken Niumatalolo is one of my favorite football personalities. So it's Navy all the way.

Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl
Ole Miss (7-5) Rebels vs
Georgia Tech (7-5) Yellow Jackets
Nashville, TN
3:15pm
ESPN

Mortgage and Music just don't go together for me. Ah branding. Going for the yellow jackets this year. Not exactly sure why… maybe ACC over SEC? Who knows?

Valero Alamo Bowl
Oregon (10-2) Ducks vs
Texas (8-4) Longhorns
San Antonio, TX
6:45pm
ESPN

Quite a bit of turmoil in and around the Texas program this winter; it will be interesting to see how it all works out for the Longhorns; college football will miss Mack Brown (until he comes back, that is). Oregon had a little bit of a post-Kelly hangover this year, but is still stocked full with talent. The Ducks definitely have a talent for making other teams' uniforms more palatable, and when the other team is wearing burnt orange, that is an extra special gift. But not enough to sway my bias going with the Horns for this one.

National University Holiday Bowl
Arizona State (10-3) Sundevils vs
Texas Tech (7-5) Red Raiders
San Diego, CA
10:15pm
ESPN

I know that the Sundevils have had a good season (and I was even pulling for them in a few games) and that the stadium will (doubtlessly) be packed with Coach Graham’s family, but I have to go with Texas Tech for this one. As if there was any question

Tuesday, December 31, 2013

AdvoCare V100 Bowl
Arizona (7-5) Wildcats vs
Boston College (7-5) Eagles
Shreveport, LA
12:30pm
ESPN

This one is painful. These are two coaches that I generally dislike. As as a casual Temple fan, I never really took to Steve Addazio as a coach, and thought he left in a rather (albeit not surprising) smarmy manner. Coach Rodriguez? well... For some reason I’m finding the Wildcats less yucky.

Hyundai Sun Bowl
Virginia Tech (8-4) Hokies vs
UCLA (9-3) Bruins
El Paso, TX
2:00pm
CBS

Haven't had the strong west coast bias that I had a few years ago, but whatever, I'm sticking with the east for this one. Hokies for the win.

AutoZone Liberty Bowl
Rice (10-3) Owls vs
Mississippi State (6-6) Bulldogs
Memphis, TN
4:00pm
ESPN

Blue owls are all the rage this year (did you know?) - and the emergence of the Rice Owls this season is right on trend. While I'm an admirer of the MSU cowbell (cowbells in general, that is), my pick is Rice.

Chick-fil-A Bowl
Duke (10-3) Blue Devils vs
Texas A&M (8-4) Aggies
Atlanta, GA
8:00pm
ESPN

A 10 win Rice team in a bowl game is unusual, but to be followed by a 10 win Duke team is downright improbable (where is John Urschel??). Not typically a Duke (or SEC) fan, but I'll be pulling for the Blue Devils to outsmart Johnny Football in this game.

Wednesday, January 1, 2013

TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl
Nebraska (8-4) Cornhuskers vs
Georgia (8-4) Bulldogs
Jacksonville, FL
12:00pm
ESPN2

Pelini seems to wiggle his way out of bad situations, whether it’s an overtime game or the proverbial hot seat. Normally I would side with the B1G team (somewhat normally), but I’m going with Georgia this year.

Heart of Dallas Bowl
UNLV (7-5) Rebels vs
North Texas (8-4) Mean Green
Dallas, TX
12:00pm
ESPNU

Formerly known as "The Normal Boys", North Texas' Mean Green is one of my favorite mascot names, even if *Scrappy* (the owl) isn't as menacing as you might imagine. So Gooooooooooooo Mean Green!!

Capital One Bowl
Wisconsin (9-3) Badgers vs
South Carolina (10-2) Gamecocks
Orlando, FL
1:00pm
ABC

Old Ball Coach - It’s sometimes comforting to think back to the days of “smell my fingers” and sincere disdain for Steveirino. It, like many things, has mellowed over the years, but it’s still there, lingering... and besides, he and his team are up against a B1G team (also one of PSU’s wins) so I see the Badgers winning; and winning big. (apology in advance for any jinx)

Outback Bowl
Iowa (8-4) Hawkeyes vs
LSU (9-3) Tigers
Tampa, FL
1:00pm
ESPN

It is amazing how my dislike of iowa can wane in the years we don’t play them (winning in wrestling helps too)- and I’m happy to see them in a New Year’s Day bowl game.  LSU, is, of course, one of my lesser disliked Ehmahgerd HessEeeSee teams, but the B1G takes this one.

Rose Bowl Game
Stanford (11-2) Cardinal vs
Michigan State (12-1) Spartans
Pasadena, CA
5:00pm
ESPN

This is probably the bowl game that I am looking forward to the most. The teams are well matched and it could/should be an entertaining match-up, even with MSU's top linebacker (Max Bullough) being suspended for the game. Stanford is a strong team, and they racked up some impressive wins this year. I’m quite pleased that Michigan State beat tosu in the championship game, even if it did knock the B1G out of the National Championship game (although I really blame tosu for this). A good way to atone will be with a Rose Bowl win.

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
UCF (11-1) Knights vs
Baylor (11-1) Bears
Glendale, AZ
8:30pm
ESPN

As much as I think the Stanford/MSU game will be the most fun to watch - this is the game where I probably have the most sincere bias... against. There is no question about which team I will be supporting - Baylor.

Thursday, January 2, 2014

Allstate Sugar Bowl
Oklahoma (10-2) Sooners vs
Alabama (11-1) Crimson Tide
New Orleans, LA
8:30pm
ESPN

Spent most of the season rooting for whatever team was playing Alabama (right up to the last seconds of the regular season, to be precise), but now I don't have much reason to root against them, and Oklahoma certainly isn't going to sway me.

Friday, January 3, 2014

AT&T Cotton Bowl
Oklahoma State  (10-2) Cowboys vs
Missouri (11-2) Tigers
Arlington, TX
7:30pm
FOX

Hey, what happened to all those allegations against the Cowboys? Nothing? It’s amazing what can happen when you have administrators and backers that support the school and team. oh well - still (kinda) like Mike Gundy. This matchup of former conference-mates should be interesting. I don’t really have a bias against Mizzou, or none I can really remember, but the cowboys get my pick(ens)

Discover Orange Bowl
Clemson (10-2) Tigers vs
Ohio State (12-1) Buckeyes
Miami Gardens, FL
8:30pm
ESPN

Okay, so I was rooting for tOSU for 9/10 of the B1G championship game, honest. But in the end, I wasn't sad to see Urban and the nuts beaten, and knocked out of the championship game. But I'll be a good B1Gger for the Orange Bowl and root for OH - IO.

Saturday, January 4, 2014

BBVA Compass Bowl
Vanderbilt (8-4) Commodores vs
Houston (8-4) Cougars
Birmingham, AL
1:00pm
ESPN

When my mother was a teenager she babysat a little boy who (eventually) went to Vanderbilt. She always talked about how smart he was and what a great school it was. Annoyed the heck out of me. That said, the Commodores are a pretty solid underdog choice and no reason to not root for them.

Sunday, January 5, 2014

GoDaddy Bowl
Arkansas State (7-5) Red Wolves vs
Ball State (10-2) Cardinals
Mobile, AL
9:00pm
ESPN

Don’t really have an opinion of Ark State - except that it took me a disproportionately long time to memorize their mascot. On the other side of the field, it’s been an excellent season for the Cardinals this year, and it would be nice to see them continue those winning ways.

Monday, January 6, 2014

BCS National Championship Game
Florida State (13-0) Seminoles vs
Auburn (12-1) Tigers
Pasadena, CA
8:30pm
ESPN

Amid the distractions FSU has climbed its way back into the upper strata of College Football. Their coach, Jimbo Fisher, has one of the more interesting names, but the fun stops there. Age old bias against the ‘Noles will keep me from rooting for them. Yes I'm aware that Auburn is in the SEC, and that the State of Alabama has won too many championships for anyone's good - but this isn't about states or conferences - and I just can't root for FSU.

The 2theLion Biased Bowl Blusterings Are Back! 2013 - 2014 FBS Bowl Picks! (A Second Opinion)

AmandaKT's -while less Ryan Gosling - way more biased bowl picks.  And with 10 minutes to spare before first kick off!!

(Bowl) Seasons Greetings!

Saturday, December 21, 2013

Gildan New Mexico Bowl
Washington State (6-6) Cougars vs Colorado State (7-6) Rams
Albuquerque, NM
2:00pm
ESPN

I am complete biased on this one folks.  LET’S GO RAMS!  My sister works at CSU – I was there over the summer.  Now, no one at the school has any school spirit but I totally love the Rams!  In fact, here I am at CSU’s stadium in July!  GO RAMS!

Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl
Fresno State (11-1) Rams vs USC (9-4) Trojans
Las Vegas, NV
3:30pm
ABC

I pretty much dislike USC.  We all do.  They are primadonas.  But I really really like Ed Orgeron and I think he should’ve gotten the head coaching position there.  So USC
(someone get me mouthwash)

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Buffalo vs San Diego State
Boise, ID
5:30pm
ESPN

I love bufflo chicken dip, buffalo wings, the GooGoo Dolls are from Buffalo and I love them too.  I pretty much dislike anything from San Diego.  Plus I feel bad for Buffalo, their pro team is the Bills and they just can’t.  So, Buffalo over San Diego.

R+L Carrier New Orleans Bowl
Tulane vs. Louisiana-Lafayette
New Orleans, LA
9:00pm
ESPN

Hm, I think I always pick Ragin’ Cajuns because that might just be the most awesome mascot name ever.  And Green Wave??  That makes me think of Green Latern and despite how yummy Ryan Reynolds was in lycra and spandex that was a horrible movie.  However the Cajun’s are without their starting QB.  Guess I’m riding the wave.  Tulane puts out the Cajun fire.

Monday, December 23, 2013

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg
East Carolina vs Ohio
St. Petersburg, FL
2:00pm
ESPN

Well this is a no brainer.  I hate Ohio and everything in it.  And Pirates are totally hot.  Bobcats are walking the plank in this one.

Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl
Boise State vs Oregon State
Honolulu, HI
8:00pm
ESPN

This game is going to be like a hunters safety convention-so much orange.  This is a tough call for me.  I adore Oregon State. However my brain is saying the Broncos are going to run all over the Beavers.  Unfortunately I don’t think the Beavers are ending their bowl losing streak in Hawaii.  Broncos wins.

Thursday, December 26, 2013

Little Caesars Pizza Bowl
Pittsburgh vs Bowling Green
Detroit, MI
6:00pm
ESPN

First off, let me congratulate sP-I-T-T for finding a way out of the Compass Bowl.  Too bad it took you to Detroit.  At least the swag is Pizza! Pizza!  I could care less about this game and probably won’t watch.  Ugh, but it’s NBA season and I hate the NBA.  Fine, I pick watching this game over the NBA.

San Diego County CU Poinsettia Bowl
Utah State vs Northern Illinois
San Diego, CA
9:30pm
ESPN

The mascot “Aggie” has always baffled me.  Outside of the ‘buckeye’, it’s got to be the least frightening of college mascots.  Watch out for the Farmer. OOOhhhh scary.  Not. Huskies are fierce, majestic dogs. Plus Lynch is an awesome QB.  Always go with the great QB.  NIU wins!

Friday, December 27, 2013

Military Bowl
Marshall vs Maryland
Annapolis, MD
2:30pm
ESPN

Marshall and Maryland in the Military Bowl.  I feel like this game should be sponsored by M&M.  I wonder, has Delany spoken to Maryland’s AD about their uniforms yet and said “seriously buddy, tone it down”?  Does anyone know what Marshall is a ‘Thundering Herd’ of?  Cows?  Horses?  Elephants?  Either way, they are going to thunder past those Maryland turtles.

Texas Bowl
Syracuse vs Minnesota
Houston, TX
6:00pm
ESPN

Ugh, the first of the B1G predictions.  These games get me every year.  I want to be loyal to our brothers in arms but they always do me wrong.  However, can you really bet against a team who is playing for a coach who is up in the press box?  As Penn Staters know a la 2008, you can’t.  Go Gophers!

Fight Hunger Bowl
BYU vs Washington
San Francisco, CA
9:30pm
ESPN

Classic match up of cats vs dogs.  I’m a dog lover normally, but the Huskies never seem to get it right. Not to mention I think they are smarting from Sakisian leaving (who didn’t see that coming).  BYU has the right colors (blue and white), haven’t lost in a bowl game recently and more importantly hasn’t lost to the Huskies in awhile.  After spending too much time with my roomates cats – CATS WIN!

Saturday, December 28, 2013

New Era Pinstripe Bowl
Rutgers vs Notre Dame
Bronx, NY
12:00pm
ESPN

Holy Crap!  It’s NYC vs Jersey!  This game is pitting Wall St guys vs the guys that drive those guys to work. Things are gonna be tense on that island.  Notre Dame is winning this game.  Let’s be honest.  Money wins and the Queen doesn’t have any.  Let’s move on.

Belk Bowl
Cincinnati vs North Carolina
Charlotte, NC
3:20pm
ESPN

Cincinnati is in Ohio.  And I hate Ohio.  I’m not really a huge fan of UNC either but choose your hate wisely.  Tarheels over Bearcats.

Russell Athletic Bowl
Miami vs Louisville
Orlando, FL
6:45pm
ESPN

I sincerely enjoyed watching Miami destroy Pitt at home this past Nov.  It was truly one of the most enjoyable games to watch with Pitt fans all around.  Good times.  So, while I normally am not a Miami fan, for that entertainment, I shall pay them back with a victory nod.  Hurricanes sweep by Cardinals.

Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl
Michigan vs Kansas State
Tempe, AZ
10:15pm
ESPN

For some insane reason, there are several canvas Kansas State wall prints at the Walmart for sale.  They’ve been there for ever.  Somebody screwed up in purchasing.  KSU has sucked in the post season and while Michigan has been rather inconsistent this season, I say they manage to pull this off like they did with the final kick to send the jNW game into OT.

The 2theLion Biased Bowl Blusterings Are Back! 2013 - 2014 FBS Bowl Picks!

(Bowl) Seasons Greetings!

You've missed it, admit it. While our one year bowl ban hiatus from the biased bowl picks was fun, we're really glad to be back to channelling the bile (and sometimes butterflies, but mostly bile). It's an ancient tradition, from way back in 2005, that's well worth re-kindling.

This year, to get us on track we've (sold out to very tired meme cliche) employed our favorite Canadian to chime in on the match-ups.

So here are the games from December 21st - December 28th!

Let the fun begin!!

Saturday, December 21, 2013

Gildan New Mexico Bowl
Washington State (6-6) Cougars vs
Colorado State (7-6) Rams
Albuquerque, NM
2:00pm
ESPN

There are very few personalities in sports (or anywhere) that are more entertaining than Washington State's Coach Mike Leach - and I enjoy watching his teams on the field - whether winning or not. Jim McElwain, former Alabama (oh, you've heard of them?) OC, has gotten the Rams to a bowl game in his 2nd season as head coach. Really no contest here on the bias meter - Washington State.

Enough Said

Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl
Fresno State (11-1) Bulldogs vs
USC (9-4) Trojans
Las Vegas, NV
3:30pm
ABC

Fresno State - Talk about a high powered offense, the bulldogs are averaging 45 points per game - now their opponents are scoring some points as well (avg 30 ppg), so it will be interesting to see how these two teams match up. With the departure of Lane Kiffin, and Ed Orgeron, it’s certainly been a roller coaster season for the Trojans. This will be Silas Redd’s last game as a college football player - as I’ve stated before, I’ve never wished Silas *ill* but I haven’t been rooting for him either. I guess this will change on the 21st.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Buffalo (8-4) Bulls vs
San Diego State (7-5) Aztecs
Boise, ID
5:30pm
ESPN

Buffalo is in the midst of a great turn-around. It’s not that long ago that the Bulls were regulars on the *bottom of the barrel* lists. They should also be pretty well conditioned for the Idaho weather. The Aztecs, aka Brady Hoke's old haunt, however, as members of the Mountain West Conference, are well acquainted with the Smurf Turf. Interesting tidbit: San Diego State played in 4 overtime games this season (winning 3); don't tell O'bie. Our loyalties are leaning toward the North: Buffalo.

R+L Carrier New Orleans Bowl
Tulane (7-5) Green Wave vs.
Louisiana-Lafayette (8-4) Ragin' Cajuns
New Orleans, LA
9:00pm
ESPN

Tulane plays their home games in the Superdome and LA-Lafayette are just 2 hours down I-10. So this is basically a home game for both teams. Tulane wins the "most interesting color combo" competition (it's real; I promise) sporting Olive Green and Sky Blue - but I think that the Sun Belt Champ Cajuns win on the mascot front with Cayenne; that's hot. Gotta go with the spice: LA-Lafayette.

Monday, December 23, 2013

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg
East Carolina (9-3) Pirates vs
Ohio (7-5) Bobcats
St. Petersburg, FL
2:00pm
ESPN

Purple vs Green; this is a particularly Wimbledony match up. It feels appropriate for ECU to be playing in the Beef 'o' Brady's Bowl, in St. Petersburg - seems like a probable Pirate venue. The Bobcats are having a bit of a *rebuilding year*. We're still a bit bitter about last year, and see ECU winning this one.

Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl
Boise State (8-4) Broncos vs
Oregon State (6-6) Beavers
Honolulu, HI
8:00pm
ESPN

I’m mildly a fan of (this) OSU. The Beavers sprinted out to a 6-1 record and proceeded to lose their next 5 games. Not very promising, but again, potential for winning is not a deciding factor in this list. I have spent many a winter night rooting for the Broncos, a loyalty that might shift slightly west next year, we'll see. Hmmm. Let's go with the Beavers turning around their season and getting the win.

Thursday, December 26, 2013

Little Caesars Pizza Bowl
Pittsburgh (6-6) Panthers vs
Bowling Green (9-3) Falcons
Detroit, MI
6:00pm
ESPN

Pittsburgh (6-6) Panthers - Ah Pitt. Let’s see... do I have any bias for or against the panthers? Honestly, over the years my opinion of pitt has diluted so much that I didn’t really have a strong opinion about them. But, keeping with tradition, their fan base continues to exhibit great jacknuttery. The most interesting thing (to me) about Bowling Green is that there is absolutely no green in their uniforms; the 2nd most interesting thing, this month, is that they aren't pitt.

San Diego County CU Poinsettia Bowl
Utah State (8-4) Aggies vs
Northern Illinois (12-1) Huskies
San Diego, CA
9:30pm
ESPN

2 first year coaches taking over successful programs after their bosses abandoned them left for other jobs. Matt Wells, a former Utah State Quarterback, and the Aggies continued the (newish) trend of winning seasons. It was an incredible run for Northern Illinois this year - it is difficult to stay undefeated regardless of who your opponents may be. Rod Carey (Indiana alum) had little trouble picking up the reins. Although Utah State wears a lovely shade of blue, I'll go with the Huskies.

Friday, December 27, 2013

Military Bowl
Marshall (9-3) Thundering Herd vs
Maryland (7-5) Terrapins
Annapolis, MD
2:30pm
ESPN

Maryland is joining the B1G next year - I could be rooting for them for this reason, but, on the other hand, many of their fans have been nasty little buggers on their (and leaching into our) message boards and blogs. One year left with no B1G *loyalty* pangs. Marshall is kinda the ultimate underdog, and I always root for the underdog.

Texas Bowl
Syracuse (6-6) Orange vs
Minnesota (8-4) Golden Gophers
Houston, TX
6:00pm
ESPN

A PSU win vs a PSU defeat. What to do - What to do? Logically speaking I should probably root for the orange to beat the Gophers to algorithmicly even the score - but there’s no logic in biased football picks! Minne has had an emotional season - they seem to be playing with more focus and drive in support of Coach Kill - and in some weird way I'm happy for their success - most of it anyway.

Fight Hunger Bowl
BYU (8-4) Cougars vs
Washington (8-4) Huskies
San Francisco, CA
9:30pm
ESPN

Washington has grabbed the brass ring on the cute coach carousel so I'll jump on the bandwagon a little early and pick them against BYU.

Saturday, December 28, 2013

New Era Pinstripe Bowl
Rutgers (6-6) Scarlet Knights vs
Notre Dame (8-4) Fighting Irish
Bronx, NY
12:00pm
ESPN

Folks are taking note of the fact that the Pinstripe Bowl is the only bowl this season that features two programs with respectable graduation rates culture. Rutgers is joining the B1G next season, and their message boards are lighting up about how they're going to out recruit PSU in the future; I just hope that their fans can remember that there's no crying in football. Notre Dame is Notre Dame, and I don't really see Rutgers as a reason to feel any differently.

Belk Bowl
Cincinnati (9-3) Bearcats vs
North Carolina (6-6) Tar Heels
Charlotte, NC
3:20pm
ESPN

Cincinnati Bearcats - so very little opinion about the Bearcats. They participated in one of the worst football games I’ve ever witnessed - but they’ve been there for some fun ones too.  The tar heels played well this season and had some chances to log a much better record. But no chance here (at least not for my endorsement).

Russell Athletic Bowl
Miami (9-3) Hurricanes vs
Louisville (11-1) Cardinals
Orlando, FL
6:45pm
ESPN

Al Golden is one of my favorite people in sports and that sentiment has been able to quiet a (nearly) life-long disdain for the Canes. I'm wondering if a"non-crippled" Miami will be (even) less palatable. Louisville is home to a lot of nice people (seriously, what else is there?). So, albeit with some blech: Miami.

Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl
Michigan (7-5) Wolverines vs
Kansas State (7-5) Wildcats
Tempe, AZ
10:15pm
ESPN

It's been a topsy-turvy season for the Wolverines. They started out lucky winning their first 5 games and then things went a bit awesome wonky. The men of michigan (with much help from their coach, Brady Hoke) were a big part of the best day I’ve had at Beaver Stadium in a very long time. I have found myself rooting for Kansas State in the (getting to be rather distant) past but there's no compelling reason to root for them this year. Michigan.
