Today, as those at Penn State, and around the world, remember Joe Paterno, I picture Heaven in my head. After finishing some orientation with the Saints, God and Joe take a walk. They pause and God parts the clouds to show Joe all the people in the Bryce Jordan Center, at the Hub, in conference and living rooms and glued to their computer monitors, celebrating his life. And then God says "Look around. Look around. It's because they all love you".

Part 2 of Being Ready; Bill O'Brien's coaching staff

There have been announcements, and confirmations of the men who will fill the assistant coaching positions at PSU under Bill O'Brien (for the meantime, anyway).

Attention readers, grains of salt may be found in the entry way and may be taken as needed/desired.

First of all I want to say that I have been an advocate of a coaching overhaul for years (many years) and even with the upheaval of November, ignoring any pangs of regret and nostalgia, it has been very clear to me that, regardless of what fans, alum, lettermen, I may have wanted or hoped for, PSU had really no choice but to bring in a totally new staff.

O'Brien has retained Larry Johnson, Sr. as Defensive Line coach and Ron Vanderlinden as Linebacker coach. I'm pleased to see these two remain at PSU - I think they are exceptionally talented coaches and I look forward to their continued success. He has also kept Strength and Conditioning Coach John Thomas.

So let's get started -

First, there's Tight End coach John Strollo, who currently coaches O line for Ball State - a position he's held for 1 season. I don't really have any beef with Strollo, except that his resume is devoid of FBS experience, except for 3 seasons at Duke and this 1 season at Ball State. And, in the last 31 years, he's worked at 11 different schools - his longest tenure (81-82 and 84-90) being at Northeastern.

Next - Charles London, running backs. London played college ball at Duke and, after a number of years working in front offices (including event planning for Disney Wide World of Sports) he took a job as assistant for the Chicago Bears and then (look for a pattern) last season he moved to the Tennessee Titans where he served as Offensive Assistant/Quality Control coach.

Let's move on to John Butler - oh John Butler - if this works out, you are destined to be my favorite - consider yourself warned. Butler (gotta love the name) will coach Dbacks (fav players too). I would/should put Butler at the end - but I'm going to try and be optimistic (this will make more sense later). Butler got his coaching start in 2001, at SouthWestern State, and has spent time at Harvard and Minnesota. And, (all together now) since 2011, he has worked at South Carolina (eep! Steve Spurrier) as Special Teams Coordinator - BUT DON'T WORRY - he coached d-backs at South Western State. Still cute.

And that takes us to the remaining assistant coaches - Mac McWhorter, offensive line, Stan Hixon, Wide Receivers, George Godsey, quarterbacks and Ted Roof, Defensive Coordinator.

All of these gentlemen have one thing in common - they have worked for George O'Leary (he's baaaaaack).

McWhorter, who played for Georgia, has been coaching college ball since 1980 - spending time at a lot of prestigious schools, including Bama, Clemson, UGA and most recently at Texas - he has coached the Longhorns' line since 2002. But from 2000 - 2001 he worked at Georgia Tech, for and with George O'Leary - and he stepped in as GT's head coach (after O'Leary left) for their 2001 bowl game.

Stan Hixon, PSU's new wide receivers coach left the college football scene in 2004 to work for the Washington Redskins and has worked for the Buffalo Bills since 2010. Hixon spent some time in FCS in the 1980s, but later took gigs at South Carolina and Wake Forest - before he went to work at Georgia Tech in 1995 where he worked for O'Leary through the 1999 season (when he left to go to LSU).

George Godsey never worked at Georgia Tech! but he played there - for George O'Leary. AND he worked for O'Leary down at UCF from 2004 - 2010. He worked as an offensive assistant (focusing on quarterbacks!) for the Patriots - for the 2011 season. He is our new quarterbacks coach.

And finally, Ted Roof, Defensive Coordinator - this is the one hire that most people have some concerns about - his resume is impressive - National Championship at Auburn, working for Alabama and Minnesota; but it's the actual performance of his squads that have most fans worried. He was at Minnesota for 1 season 2008 (was there with Butler) - Which is indicative of his career, having worked for 11, now 12 teams in the last 25 years. AND from 1998 - 2001 he worked at Georgia Tech. And he was slated to move with O'Leary to Notre Dame (he went to Duke instead - wait, who else went to Duke?). Roof worked for Auburn 2009 - 2011 but at the end of the season (okay 1 month ago) he was relieved of his duties - on his way to being Penn State's DC he made one quick stop - he was hired as UCF's DC - for one month.

I want to stop typing George O'Leary - and maybe if someone would just address this issue - please please please - just explain why you're reassembling your former boss/mentor's staff? I realize that these are people with whom O'Brien worked over the years - I do, I get it - but just a quick - even a canned, patronizing answer - that's all I want.

Or maybe this is all just payback for all those times PSU beat Syracuse ...

On a lighter note - We Have a Winner; 2011 - 2012 Totally Biased Bowl Preditions

As you may have heard (or counted) - we have a tie in our final standing for the Totally Biased Bowl Predictions for the 2011- 2012 bowl season.

It came down to the final game - both ILOVEPSUTOO and PSUgirl finished the contest 23/35 (65+% - not too shabby) and AMANDAKT finished a remarkably close 2nd (or 3rd) with 22/35.

TAILGATEMAVEN, who remained consistently awesome, valiantly finished.

So, since the whole idea behind the picks is bias - I, as holder and distributor of the (for entertainment only) prizes, am exercising total subjectivity and declaring ILOVEPSUTOO the winner - and soon to be recipient of a resplendent PSU licensed blanket with sleeves (by soon, she and I both know that, I probably mean Blue White).

Further! I am bumping AMANDAKT up to 2nd place (I'm biasedly demoting myself to participant).

I think I'm ready to post about this; Penn State Hires Bill O'Brien as Head Coach

I haven't been exactly mum regarding PSU's new football coach (on Facebook/Twitter) - but I haven't posted anything here - until now.

I have a lot of opinions about Penn State, and the last 2 months, and the coaching search - but this (and, I'm thinking, subsequent posts) is about O'Brien and his proposed staff.

Bill O'Brien comes to us - well, he's not exactly here yet - from the New England Patriots. He is currently, I say currently, because he is not going to leave the Patriots until they are finished with the playoffs, the Offensive Coordinator for the Patriots - and has worked for them for the last 5 seasons.

I'm not thrilled that he's staying with the Pats, especially because there's less than a month before signing day, but this really isn't my biggest concern with O'brien's resume and/or choices.

O'brien is a Brown grad - whoa JVP clone - and he's spent time coaching at his alma mater, Duke and Maryland. Interesting? maybe. Thrilling? no. Promising? don't know yet. And then you add his longest coaching job - working for George O'Leary at Georgia Tech.

George O'Leary gained steadfast infamy in 2001, when he was hired by Notre Dame University - which is enough to insure one's place, good or bad, in the hallowed halls of college football fame - but O'Leary never coached a game - in fact he didn't last a week, because, within 5 days it was discovered that he had (for years) lied on his resume regarding his education and playing career. The embarrassing fallout cost him his job, and, frankly, put ND in a bit of a tailspin for years. During those 5 days, however, he did have a chance to name an offensive coordinator, Bill O'Brien.

Embarrassing, no doubt, but, come one - let's not blame the soldier for the general's mistake - right?

Well, that's not the only mistake.

While at GT, O'Leary, and, subsequently, O'Brien, played ineligible athletes - resulting in NCAA sanctions and probation. O'Leary and the school claimed that all of the ineligible players were fielded due to clerical error - that the registrar did not properly report the credits of players - 11 in total. The inquiry and sanctions hit GT after O'Leary left. Wow. Relying on admin to know what's going on with your players grades, and class credits? Over 6 years? Okay, fine - mistakes happen.

But O'Leary's troubles haven't ended there - after not working for the Irish, O'Leary spent a few seasons coaching for the Vikings, until 2004, when he returned to college ball and took the job at upstart University of Central Florida. Since taking the job, UCF has been put on probation for recruiting violations and there was the unbelievably tragic case of Ereck Plancher. Plancher died following a practice drill - in a resulting wrongful death suit, UCF, and O'Leary were found to be negligent.

So, okay, get over it - O'Leary (who still works for UCF) is an energetic coach who turns teams around and gets results on the field! - And anyway, it's O'Brien that we hired, not O'Leary - and it's not like he's hiring a bunch of other O'Leary protégée - right? right?

Wrong.

Including O'Brien 5 new coaches have worked for O'Leary (more on them later).

And regardless of their success, enthusiasm, pedigree, WHATEVER - and regardless of what, if any, part they have played in the black cloud that follows O'Leary - it's the fact that NO ONE has mentioned this connection - NO ONE has commented or said "oh, we learned from mistakes" - I'm not asking for a lot - it's just as we Penn Staters weather this storm and travel this new road - what we have learned is that secrecy doesn't work and ignoring problems doesn't make them go away. We have been clinging to the idea that we can salvage our reputation with a clean new crew and attitude - So what the hooha is going on??????

I want to move on (no really - I do!!) - I want PSU to be successful sweet and special - it's just going to take me a while to get on the O'Brien bandwagon.

They say for every season there is a time for change. Change is something historically Penn Staters have not had to experience or handled well when it does happen (see uniform changes).

However, change has been thrust upon us. Drastic changes we knew would come at some point, but not in this way. But we have a choice on how we go from here. We can accept our new Coach, trust him not to lead us in the wrong direction. Or we can resist.

I choose the former. I will not blindly follow, but I will give Coach a chance to earn my trust, as he asked. But to move forward, we must first say thanks to the man that makes this change so hard.

Thank you JoePa for showing all of us, both inside and outside the football family, what it means to be an honorable person. For showing us what words like dignity, integrity and pride mean. Thank you for showing us that there was a better, a right way, of doing things. Thank you for believing in us.

My Current Playlist; Tailgating (and coping) with Music

I love making playlists - for just about everything, but especially for tailgates/parties. I have created scores of song collections based on our weekly tailgate themes, crowd, moods, etc. This season I had started compiling one for the Nebraska game - our scheduled theme was "best of" - we were celebrating 10 seasons of knockout awesome tailgates, and I wanted to pick some excellent songs to fit the mood.

And then things changed. Drastically. I don't know if it was Wednesday or Thursday night that week, but I started a new playlist of songs that just reflected my mood at the time - most where angsty or whiney songs - but they really meant something to me. We didn't play any music at the Nebraska tailgate (which, btw, was kickarse) - but I've been listening (and adding) to the playlist ever since.

Well, I'm in a kinda bitter and sad place right now. I'm trying (no really, I am) to work my way through what has happened to Penn State in the last 2 months - and while I don't really have any answers, I do have my iPod (shoutout to Tailgate Maven!).

Let's start by stating I have never been a fan of Jay Paterno. I disliked the nepotism and failure to adapt that he represented. I assumed that coaching was a stop along his way to something in politics or journalism. In fairness it probably was part of his plan if things hadn't gone so wrong this year. But I'll say this - Jay has faced scorn of the media (and of most fans going back to his clipboard days) and through it all has kept his head high and been there for the players. I am still not convinced he belongs on the sidelines on Saturdays in Happy Valley, but I'm convinced he deserves a place at Penn State. Maybe the Athletic Department (couldn't be worse than Joyner) or on the Board of Trustees. Wouldn't that be sweet justice for him to be on the BOT? So to Jay Paterno, you say Penn State has been your life and I believe you. Your actions since November 5 convince me you belong at Penn State, something I never thought I'd be convinced of.

Just got back from the pep rally at the Cotton Bowl. It really hit me today when Coach Bradley was speaking that after tomorrow, Penn State football is going to be a lot different. All new staff, possibly new traditions.

What won't change though is our love for Penn State. We are a family. We will always be a family.

The 'Hot' Coach Selection Process

Some may be looking at coaching records, tenure, or rule compliance when considering who should be the next head coach. I'll leave that to the folks who are much savvier than me to decide. Me, I'm basing my head coach selection on something more important...hotness and likeability. C'mon people...stay with me here.... After years of JoePa aren't we due for a little bit of hotness on the sidelines? Add in a dash of charm and we'd have a winner, winner, chicken dinner!

When I started my search I was faced with some tough (ugly, really) realities.

How could you NOT love this man? On the hotness scale he's at least a 9.5. Great smile, personality, and abs? Yes please! Ok, so yes, he's in the NFL and why would he ever leave the Steelers, but this is my dream head coach for PSU. I'd probably spring for the expensive seats just to get closer to him! I swoon....

Facing the harsh reality that he'll never come to Happy Valley, I took a look at some of the top (rumoured) contenders and there are 2 choices that will fit the 'hotness' bill. Now don't get me wrong, they're no Tomlin, but they are at least worthy of a glance to the sidelines.

1.Chris Peterson - Boise State

The pearly whites alone make him at least an 8 on the hotness scale. And we know he looks good in blue (although it's not navy). Anyone who can look good against a field of blue can hold up in Happy Valley. He does have one drawback that might lower his hotness scale...

2. Mark Richt - University of Georgia

If you can forget his years at Florida State (ugh!) and focus on only the important thing - his hotness- I think we can agree he would make a F-I-N-E head coach to keep an eye on. I do love a good southern boy;) And those close to me know I have a soft spot for UGA, so I think he'd be a great choice for our next coach.

Waiting for New Joe; Rumors of Possible PSU Coaches Continue

I'm going to admit something - nearly every time I type "Coach" I have to pause and make sure I didn't type "Couch," which may be the same problem the search committee is having (there has to be some explanation).

So, more rumors today regarding who will be named as PSU's new coach (not as much of an issue when all lower case for some reason). The candidate du jour? Bob Stoops (no, really) - and not just Bob, but his brother, Mike, who happens to be available this winter, as well. Sort of a gift with purchase kinda offer. Hey, while they're at it, brother Ron, Jr. is an assistant at Youngstown State (go Penguins!!!) and Mark is DC at fsu - why not bring them all in? We LOVE nepotism at PSU.

Stoops is a former Hawkeye, where he played DB. His big coaching break came in the late 90s while serving as DC under Steve Spurrier (Yay! Tailgate Maven's BFF!) at Florida. Stoops got the Oklahoma head coaching job in 1999 - where he has enjoyed enviable success.

He is married and has 3 children.

On the cuteness scale - He's not bad - but he seems to lack a twinkle in the eye (although they are a beautiful blue). I don't see him at Penn State - but, as we've been asking a lot lately, who knows what's right for PSU now?

His current salary seems prohibitive - if PSU is going to match or increase that amount - I think we can do much cuter.

PG: Hmm. Meineke Car Care. These picks are supposed to be biased, that’s the basis and origin for this annual posting. This year I feel that the organizers of this bowl exercised some bias themselves - but let’s move on. Texas A&M v. Northwestern - usually this would be a slam dunk choice for Fitz & the boys in purple - but not this year; nothing is normal this year - sorry Bethlehem, I’ll be pulling for the Aggies. TEXAS A&M

AKT: I like Fitz. The only B1G coach I like outside ours (Bradley and Paterno) Nice guy. That school is going places. Wildcats. NORTHWESTERN

TM: Don’t ask me why, but I have a long standing disdain for the Utah Utes. Maybe it’s the plural (aka bigamist) marriages in Utah (although they are no BYU). And weirdly, I have a soft spot for Georgia Tech, so again, it’s a no brainer that I’ll pick the Yellow Jackets. GEORGIA TECH

AKT: We had a yellow jacket nest in our garage this summer. I wasn’t going in there. Yellow Jackets stings the Utes in this one. GEORGIA TECH

ILPT: Neither one is cute but Yellow Jackets=faster than Utes, whatever that is. GATECH

PG: Strange things have happened this fall; strange isn’t the right word, but one of the odder things is that I find myself rooting for the yellow jackets - Go GEORGIA TECH.

ILPT: Bearcats. Lethal combination of cute and fast bear + cat. I like Motown music, but the Commodores are all in their 60s and 70s now, so I feel like a bearcat would be lethal to an elderly singer. Even a singer that sang “Brick Houuuuuseeee”. Yeah. (Sorry, Lionel Ritchie). Even without Cincy QB Zach Collaros who broke his ankle earlier this year, their D is solid, only allowing 20 pts per game, so I’m picking Cincy for that reason. And mainly because my Dad got his doctorate from Cincy when I was a teen, and technically, Cincy is responsible for his promotion and job at Penn State-DuBois, paying for my 80s prom dresses, my collection of hair scrunchies, and my Penn State tuition. Thank you. CINCINNATI

PG: Excellent story - you did so much before settling in the mountains of western central PA. Vanderbilt was one of the schools my mother held in high esteem (up there with wisconsin) - Cincinnati makes me think of 1983 and Nick Lachey - But, apparently, but for the bearcats we might never have known ILPT, I gotta go with CINCINNATI

TM: So I have a question. Are the Vandy football teams once, twice, three times a lady? But seriously folks, I need some reason to pick one team over the others, and clearly football stats aren’t important, so why not rely on the giggle factor? I won’t be able to stop seeing the players as ladies from now on, so for that reason I’ll go for the hopefully more manly Bearcats of CINCINNATI

TM: Whew, good thing the game is on Saturday otherwise they wouldn’t be able to play (we all know Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays). As I get caught up in the Hokie v Cavalier battle every year since the company I work for has an office in C’ville this is especially tough. There are equal number of friends on each side of that battle, so in the interest of keeping friends I’ll pick UVA

AKT: Chick-fil-A is fantastic. But why do I always crave them on Sundays? Grrrr. Cavs for the win. UVA

TM: Um, are you really asking me to make a pick for this? Hmm, let me think…thinking…thinking…thinking. Oh yeah! Those are my Nittany Lions, so I’m going to have to pick the Lions to win this Ticket!!! PENN STATE

AKT: Did you know a cougar and a mountain lion are the same things? I think this game will go between which is better, defense or offense. Or which McGloin shows up. Please let it be the Scranton Scrapper we all know and love. Since I don’t want to fly to Dallas for a loss – home team all the way! PENN STATE

ILPT: Yeah, I know that Houston is one of the best teams in the country. I know it’s a home game for them. I know they’re expected to win thanks to QB Keenum. But I’m picking Penn State. After all they’ve been through this year, this is their last chance to take a stand and gain redemption. They’ve got heart. And we love them. This one’s for Joe. PENN STATE

PG: I think that this game is going to be very emotional - for both teams. They each have something to prove - to the world and to themselves. I truly believe that PSU has the strength and talent to win this game - it’s going to be the incidentals that really make an impact. PSU is going to have to score points and make few errors - which means their (collective) heads must be in the game. An early start and all the outside distraction will likely weigh heavily. But the 2011 team has shown a lot of heart, determination and character this fall - and I know that the key players on the team are determined to win. Either way, they are already champions in my book - PENN STATE

AKT: In no scenerio will I ever vote against the Cornhuskers again. Their fans, their team, showed themselves to be full of class. Yes, they disappointed me because I had them going to the B1G Championship this year. But that will not sway me from picking them. Go Big Red!!! NEBRASKA

ILPT: I’m picking the Cornhuskers (not because they’re cuter or faster) because they’re that good (I mean, they beat us.) NEBRASKA

PG: One of the most painful days of my life - and I have to say, Nebraska ended up being the perfect opponent. I do think it is ridiculous that they are in the Cap 1 Bowl over MSU - but regardless, it’s an easy choice. NEBRASKA

TM: Nebraska fans showed they were classy beyond belief. I will always remember how wonderful they were on what was a very tough day. As the others have said, easy choice. NEBRASKA

ILPT: TaxSlayer? Like, OMG, Buffy?

This may be the bowl to watch. You can’t go wrong with what will forever be known as “Meyerbowl”… even though he won’t be there.

Seriously, I’m picking OSU, and not because I like them (I don’t like red teams) and not because they’re cuter than the Gators (the Buckeye is possibly the ugliest college mascot in history). They’re steadily improving and have a lot of heart. After what THEY’VE been through, I don’t think they can be broken right now. I’m actually excited to see what Braxton Miller does for OSU in this game.

PG: It should/could be an entertaining game - but I gotta go with the Gators on this one. FLORIDA

TM: Even with all the issues we’ve had this year, I still can’t forgive tOSU for being a bunch of BuckNuts. FLORIDA

AKT: Urban Bowl!! Normally I’d go for the Buckeyes here. LOL Jk never would happen. They cannot beat the SEC. FLORIDA

PG: MSU probably has a bigger beef than anyone in the B1G regarding their bowl placement - just 3 points away from Pasadena - they were bypassed by the BCS and then relegated to the Outback - oh well. I was rooting for UGA in the SEC game - and for the first half it looked like we had an upset on our hands. But not for this one, I’ve got to go with our fellow down-trodden snubees, the SPARTANS.

ILPT: MSU Sparty = cuter & faster than a bulldog. And they’re good. MSU

AKT: Spartans have fantastic abs. And if there is anything I can appreciate it’s a fine piece of washboard abs. Yummy. MICHIGAN STATE!!!

TM: Pasadena, oh how I miss you…. This takes me back to the 1995 Rose Bowl where Penn State beat the Ducks, but not by enough to capture the National Championship. Since that fateful day I have held a deep seated hatred for the Ducks. Besides, (honey) badger don’t care! The Badgers will win this one and bring the win to the Big 10. WISCONSIN

AKT: I hate Bilema. But I hate a school that cannot pick a uniform and stick with it. Plus my high school football touchdown song was On Wisconsin. Go Badgers! WISCONSIN

ILPT: Quack. Givin’ the Ducks some props since my family’s from Eugene, OR. Duck=cuter than Badger (he so nasty). OREGON

PG: I don’t blame the ducks for 1994; the aforementioned Huskers had already been anointed champions before the 95 Rose Bowl coin flip (I blame: Tom Osbourne; Todd Blacklege; and, Warren Sapp). But those uniforms are a curse on all humankind. Wisconsin is a school/team that I have always wanted to like/root for - but their fans and coach continually insist on jacknuttery. It is my (misguided) loyalty to the B1G that makes my pick WISCONSIN.

AKT: Okie State is pissed! And rightfully so. They should be in it for all the marbles but the love affair of the SEC continues. I think Stanford has the better defense overall but never ever bet against a team that’s been screwed. Okie dokie it’s the Cowboys. OKLAHOMA STATE

ILPT: OK. STATE.

PG: Yes - they have every right to be po’d - I’m not saying that they’re a better team than ua - but I feel their pain. Stanford thought that they were going to be Luckier this season - but they showed some serious chinks in their armor. Many people know, I’m a fan of Mike Gundy - cause, among other things, he’s a man. This should be an entertaining game. OKLAHOMA STATE

ILPT: In the 76 year history of the Sugar Bowl, Sugar doesn’t taste so sweet, and I don’t want any part of it. Michigan? Really? Picked ABOVE MSU even when MSU beat them outright?!? UM doesn’t deserve this. No matter—they’ll lose. I will pick Tech even though they lost the ACC champ game to Clemson (embarrassing). UM hasn’t been to a bowl in 5 years so they’re more than rusty.

PG: ACC vs the Big East. Over the years I have disliked each of these teams - one more than the other. Back before the time of recorded history (ie, when I was a young teenager) I sold sodas at the stadium. It was backbreaking, but it was a lot of $$ for 4 hours of work. Of all the visiting fans that I had to deal with, the unequivocally worst were from West Virginia - not as a group - but individually. So, in the spirit of digging up old spite - I’ll pick CLEMSON.

TM: Muck the Fountaineers (oh yes I did). CLEMSON

AKT: My bestest came back from a job interview with some Clemson tshirts. So I’ll go with them since I can wear something to show my support. CLEMSON

PG: Both teams have had pretty good, basically off the radar seasons - it will be interesting to see how they match up. Arkansas will always be the birthplace of things I have found to be odious - ie Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones. K State has produced a few memorable upsets over the years - they get me pick. The bowl that wins for worst logo (a ginger with a new wave hairdo) has a pretty solid matchup, with MAC champs vs SunBelt champs and two solid QBs. Going with Northern Illinois. Huskies are cuter than red wolves. And the ginger on the logo. NORTHERN ILL

PG: ARK State - could never remember their mascot (when on sporcle or when trying to get to sleep) - must be a sign that I need to pick the Huskies. NORTHERN ILL - oh, and regarding GoDaddy? our site is powered by 1&1 Internet.

PG: I, personally, was really hoping to see Oklahoma State in this game - yes we could argue about the “quality of losses” but it doesn’t change the fact that these two teams have already played this year. That aside, I don’t see this game being much different than the contest in early November - Although I have a sneaking suspicion that Les Miles will come out with a few tricks. As far as my bias goes, we did play Bama this year, and their win over PSU is actually helping them in the computer ranking, so it’s kinda our fault (for everything that goes wrong in the universe) that Bama’s getting a 2nd shot at the Tigers. I don’t have much against LSU, but I think I’m going to be swayed by the idea that we lost to the eventual MNC. ALABAMA.

TM: I can’t believe we are really seeing a replay for the title. Just stinks. So the question is to go for the team that won last time (LSU) or the team that has played PSU (‘Bama). There’s no good choice here. So I left it to the all knowing game of rock, paper, scissors and it chose….ALABAMA

AKT: I really really liked the Bama fans. They were really nice. However LSU wins this again!! LSU

ILPT: I.Don’t. Like.Red. Teams. And PSU played and lost to quite a few over the years. This is no exception. Now in this case, Sugar is sweet for LSU all the way. Geaux Tigers! Undefeated and matching up against ‘Bama again, they can take it all. Tigers=way cuter than Crimson Tide (a type of red algae in the ocean-yuck!) LSU.

Penn State Coaching Search - Analyzing the Cuteness.

So - the rumor mill is convinced - at least they were this morning - that Mike Munchak is Penn State's new football coach.

I admit, I find this to be improbable, considering Munchak is in his first season as head coach of the Tennessee Titans - yes, the Titans - the NFL Titans - formerly known as the Houston Oilers, the team for whom Munchak played Guard from 1982 - 1993, going All Pro 10 of those seasons - the team that retired his jersey number - the team that he has coached for since 1994 - the team whose jersey he is wearing in his PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME BUST - oh yeah, and he went to Penn State - playing 1978-1981.

The Titans, including PSU cutie Timmy Shaw, are 8-7 so far this season.

He's a Scranton native - so we know that he's got Moxie to spare.

So, let's get to the important information - His score on the cutiepie meter. You might think that Mike isn't a "first look" cutie - but that might be because the light blue of the titans' uniforms distracts you from his icy sapphire eyes. He's clean-cut, with a crooked smile - which is a plus - and, did I mention he has a bust in Canton? He's a successful businessman (hello? did he take my dad's B-Log class?) and is married with 2 daughters.

Coach Hottie for PSU Head Coach

So, I Google Image searched “cute college football coaches”, and the first picture to come up was Joe Paterno (google search results). So I would have to disagree with my esteemed colleagues’ assessment that we have been lacking in cuteness within out football department.

However, since I must pick a new head coach, I am going with Frank Cignetti, Jr. Who is this man? Well, he is currently the Offensive Coordinator for the State University of New Jersey (aka Rutgers).

Look at those eyes - so kind. And that smile - trustworthy! Coach Hottie is not just looks alone (though that is clearly reason enough to allow this man to walk the sidelines). Cignetti has great college football experience - offensive coordinator at Fresno State back when Fresno State was racking up 50 points a game. He also has experience at the NFL level with the New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs.

Plus we know he is going to age well as Dad (Frank Cignetti Sr) has aged well.

Coach Hottie also has a good Pennsylvania ties, coming from Pittsburgh (you know that is a HUGE selling point for me) and a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania - great football powerhouse that is. No, seriously, IUP is pretty good in football.

Let the Board of Trustees know you want Coach Hottie - aka Frank Cignetti, Jr - as the next head football coach of our Nittany Lions!!

How You Doin? We Chime in on the Penn State Football Coach Search.

I think that we can all agree that Penn State's coaching search has gone on longer than ~~the 100 years war~~ ~~Rip Van Winkle's beard~~ we had hoped. I wish I could say that I was surprised that PSU hasn't named/hired/interviewed a coach - but the longer this drags on, the more "typical" it seems to me.

In discussing this amongst ourselves, we've determined that, in addition to many other things, PSU has the opportunity to fill a void that has been glaringly present over the years… Penn State can hire a cutie.

Now, we're not saying that Coach Paterno wasn't a handsome man (we're not?) or a dapper dresser - in fact, thanks to his unique game day garb, I learned the meaning of the word "garb" at a very young age - but I would use just about every word in the dictionary before I would describe Coach Paterno as superficial - so he just doesn't qualify for these evaluations.

If the greatest coach in the history of College Football must be replaced, then why shouldn't we do so with the cutest? Until Penn State (AD Joyner) ends this particular stage of ridiculousness and hires someone - we're happy to jump on the ludicrous bandwagon and post some of our choices in the cuitepie category.

My personal favorite/front runner for the job is Chris Petersen of Boise State (sorry Alfred). Petersen is an exciting prospect on the football side of things, enjoying years of wins with the Broncos. He's got a certain Joeness in that he's currently at a program that just keeps winning, but doesn't get national recognition - even though they've been on the scene for years - and BSU is second only to PSU in the BCS in academics and graduation rates. Also, Coach Petersen is already used to the color blue and BSU sounds a lot like PSU - and, his name even starts with a P.

Petersen is a California native, and played quarterback at UC Davis; I have to admit, I'm not uber impressed by his academic credentials - but his obvious love for our nation's landmarks shows the type of loyalty we expect and gumption to boot. He did spend a year at pitt as qb coach - which is unfortunate - but rehabilitatable. He is, reportedly, an outdoorsman and an avid fisher - sure State College is landlocked - but we've got outdoors and Black Moshannon is just 30 minutes away.

I have used my super sleuth skills and determined, by analyzing the spelling of his last name, that he is of Scandinavian descent - specifically Danish (or Norwegian). As a Swede, I'm willing to look past this particular defect, mostly because he's just so darn good looking.

We're 4 games into the bowl season, and AmandaKT has taken an early lead. The tally so far:

It's still early, of course, but given the fact that many of our picks (biases) are similar, any lead is noteworthy.

Here we go again...

It's that time of year, dreaming of trips to Dallas, warm weather, head coach searches and preliminary hearings - IT MUST BE COLLEGE BOWL TIME!!!!

Continuing our grand tradition of pirating (HEY PIRATES ARE COOL AGAIN) ideas from those more clever, even when the originators have long since abandoned the practice, I proudly present our 2011 - 2012 Totally Biased Bowl Predictions. This is our 7th Edition of "The Bowled and the Beautiful" - We've come a long way baby!

I am so excited and proud that for this year's selections we have 4 participants!!! I actually used a random number generator to choose the order of our posts: AmandaKT (AKT); ilovepsutoo (ILPT); Moi (PG); and, TailgateMaven (TM).

ILPT: Hoot, hoot. Owls= cuter & faster than Cowboys. TEMPLE

PG: Yes, I am a Temple fan - I admit it - I do Fight, Fight, Fight for the Cherry and the White - when they aren’t playing the Blue and White - that is. TEMPLE

TM: This year I learned what it is like to head to a football game just over an hour before kick off and still be able to tailgate and make it to the seats in time to enjoy the kick off. So while they may no longer be the (Al) Golden boys, they are my pick. TEMPLE

ILPT: A potato bowl sounds really good right now, like with broccoli, bacon and some cheese… wait. Really? Idaho Potato Bowl? Who comes up with these names? Even though OU blew a strong lead in the MAC Championship to lose to Northern Illinois, I have to go with the OU Bobcats to win the 15^th Potato Bowl, but barely squeaking by. Why? Aggies don't pass the ball. They're 108th in the nation in passing. Bobcats=cute and faster than Aggies. And mainly because my Dad worked for OU for 10 years when I was a kid, and technically, OU is responsible for paying for my braces, my favorite 1980s rainbow and unicorn teeshirt, and all my Star Wars toys. Thank you. OHIO

PG: Awwww. That’s an excellent awesome reason to root for the bobcats - OHIO

TM: While ILPT makes a compelling argument (really, how can you go against The Force), I have a soft spot for Aggies. Penn State started as an agricultural school and so I’ll buck the trend and go for UTAH STATE Aggies.

AKT: Potato bowl makes me think of how KFC is trying to kill Americans with their heart attack inducing potato bowl (really!?! Had to add bacon to that, Colonel?). And since potatoes come from farmers – I have to go with the Bobcats. Besides ever since the Bobcat beat up Brutus the Buckeye, I’ve been a fan. OHIO

Ragin’ Cajuns v Aztecs

PG: I can credit Louisiana Lafayette and Sporcle with cementing my ability to spell both Lafayette and cajun. Both teams are 8-4 and which is an applaudable feat for the Aztecs and their new coach. While you might think that a Cajun of the Ragin’ variety might be an angry Acadian, but you’d be wrong; it’s not a person, it’s a pepper - a red, orange haired, pepper that can only be described as the love child of Kool-Aid Man and Vanilla Ice. So there you have it - I’m rooting for the Aztecs. SAN DIEGO STATE

TM: Let’s put some perspective here. Aztecs did give us chocolate (and were renowned for human sacrifice) so there’s no way I would go against the gods. My ‘old school’ pick is SAN DIEGO STATE

AKT: Aztecs may have given us chocolate, but they are now extinct. Cajuns are still around in Louisiana, and apparently they are ragin’. And since Cajun is my favorite spice – go Ragin; Cajuns. LOUISIANA LAFAYETTE

AKT: Normally I am not a fan of copycats, however I love Matthew Mcconaughey. Let’s go Thundering Herd of whatever you are! MARSHALL

ILPT: Oh, no. Panthers = always cuter & faster than Thundering Herd. Herd of what? FL INT

PG: Marshall is an interesting choice. It’s impossible to not think of the tragedy that their program has endured - but then, Randy Moss was only there for 2 years. The “herd” are buffalo - so you’d expect it to be pretty loud. I’m tempted to pick the Panthers - but I’m not in the mood to pick a Florida team - so MARSHALL it is.

AKT: So image googled searched what a horned frog looked like – honestly they look more bored than scary to me. Which could be a trap, luring you in by their air of complete disdain before they attack. Ohh, that’s good. I’m not betting against their sneaky ways – TCU Horned Frogs for the win.

ILPT: I’m picking TCU. Not because Horned Frogs are cute (not) and faster than Bulldogs (not) but because Horned Frogs spit blood. AWESOME. TCU.

PG: Meh, blech, blah - siss boom bah - Purple is a pretty cool color for a football team - so I too will pick the Frogs - which really aren’t frogs at all - TCU

TM: My fellow bloggers, I ask you…can not a bulldog trap a horned frog in his jowls? Can not the bulldog just eat the horned frog whole? What are you thinking??? The very informed choice is of course – LA TECH

Broncos v Sun Devils

ILPT: For the 20^th Maaco Bowl, Boise State returns against ASU. Broncos have to be faster than the cute little harmless looking Sun Devil. ASU’s lost four in a row, and up against Boise State and their strong class of seniors, I just don’t see them breaking the streak for this one. I’m picking Boise State by a landslide. BOISE STATE

PG: Oh yeah, I agree, the Broncos are definitely the better team - With all the coaching upheaval these past few weeks, it will probably be difficult for either team to concentrate - but I’m picking BOISE STATE too.

TM: I struggle a bit on this pick. Will the green turf confuse the Broncos? On the other hand I don’t know that I can ‘pick’ a devil (help me Father Kirk!). So, in the end I decided to be contrary and go for ARIZONA STATE.

AKT: laugh because now ASU has to deal with high octane football (ala Todd Graham). Seriously any school that would hire mediocrity clearly cannot be depended upon to win a football game. BOISE STATE!!

PG: Aloha. Southern Miss comes into this game 11-2 and ranked #22 in the country. I have a bias against Monsewer Favre - but I won’t hold it against the Eagles this time, this time. SOUTHERN MISS

TM: According to ILPT I hate America, but I just can’t abide by anything tainted by Favre. Plus, with all the Twilight hype (and I am on Team Jacob) it’s Wolf Pack for me. NEVADA

AKT: I want to pick Nevada, I really do. Especially since Southern Miss is ripping off Iowa. But my gut is saying Eagles.

ILPT: Golden Eagles are faster and cuter than wolves. And Eagles. American. Patriotic. Pick a wolf and you hate America. SOUTHERN MISS

AKT: I am against anything that supports smoking and clearly the tar heels are proud of their tobacco heritage. Go Tigers!!

ILPT: Mizzou. Tiger= cuter and faster than a Tar Heel. Tar is sticky and makes you stand in place. Like, seriously not good if you are a football player. MISSOURI

PG: EASY PEASY - you all knew my pick before it was even typed - MISSOURI

AKT: Do Detroit bowl games have to include a directional Michigan of some sort? Not going lie, I was hoping we would get to Detroit, only b/c of proximity to my location. I like Dallas better. Anyways – I know the Broncos are statistically better in every way to Purdon’t except in rushing yards – but don’t vote against our B1G brethren (though they like to against us – yes still holding a grudge since 1992). Purdue it is. PURDUE

ILPT: I’m picking Purdue and keeping it in the B1G 10 because the boilermaker drink = cuter and faster than a Bronco. PURDUE

PG: Oh purdiddle - I don’t want to pick you, but I must. PURDUE

TM: And there is consensus in the blogosphere. I personally can’t stand anything Michigan (except cherries!), so for me it’s PURDUE

Cardinals v Wolfpack

ILPT: Dang. One of the bowls that doesn’t involve food. No matter, in case you didn’t know, Belk’s is a department store in North Carolina. I like shopping, and they have nice socks. It’s close on either side, with both teams winning many of their last 6 games, but when you look at Louisville and their defense, that’s the edge but not by much. I give the Cardinals the win by a field goal. Cardinals =cuter and faster than wolves. LOUISVILLE

PG: Gotta go with the wolfpack on this one. Long standing non-hate trumps moderate indifference. NC STATE

TM: A friend/coworker of mine is a NC State fan and stood by me during the issues at my alma mater, so for that reason my pick is NC STATE

AKT: Can I pick a team that isn’t even sure how to pronounce it’s school name (Looavul, Luhvul, Lewisville, etc)? Cardinals are pretty birds though. Go Looeyville! LOUISVILLE

TM: My brother proudly serves in the Air Force so they could be against just about any other team (except the Nittany Lions) and I would pick AIR FORCE

ILPT: Air Force because Falcons are naturally faster than Rockets… and if you don’t pick Air Force, you hate America. AIR FORCE

TM: I’ll admit something here. Whenever I hear ‘Golden Bears’ my mind turns the mascot into ‘Gummi Bears’ (yes, the yellow ones). So for this pick I wondered who would win in a fight – a golden ‘aka’ gummi bear vs longhorn. I think the stickiness of the gummi bear would confuse a longhorn long enough to win the battle. So I’ll pick the Golden Bears over the Longhorns (sorry Matthew McConaughey – you can still call me if things with Camilla don’t work out). CAL

AKT: Gummi bears! Bouncing hear and there and everywhere! High adventure that’s beyond compare! Except a bowl win. Hook ‘em Horns! TEXAS

ILPT: Holiday… celebrate… if we took a holiday…took some time to celebrate (oh,yeah, oh yeah…)… Longhorns. Madonna would totally pick cows over bears in her videos. TEXAS

ILPT: Seminoles = cuter and faster than drunk Irish. (Oh, no, she, did-unt. Oh, yes, I did). FSU by 3. FSU

PG: HOW WHY WHERE do they come up with these match ups - is it just to hurt me? Probably not - but after a little hollerin myself - I’ll pick FSU. bleh.

TM: This is like asking me to choose if I’d like to be spit on or kicked in the face. Neither are appealing, but even with Bobby gone I just can’t pick FSU. So my pick is NOTRE DAME (that hurt…)

ILPT: Baylor’s first appearance at the 1994 Alamo Bowl resulted in a 10-3 loss to Washington State. Not this year. Bears = cuter than Huskies --- and faster especially with Heisman-winning Robert Griffin. Washington’s pass defense, at 116 in the nation, doesn’t have a shot. BAYLOR.

PG: What an awesome bit of trivia. I don’t know if bears are cuter - but I think you’re right about the FAST part - plus they have Coach Norwood - I pick BAYLOR.

TM: : I’ve been a (Jordan) Norwood fan since the moment he stepped on the field at PSU. And now that I actually remember his last name (it’s NOT Norfolk, Norwich, or Norplant) I have to go for his pops at BAYLOR

AKT: Normally, I am a fan of plain white socks. However, RGIII has the best socks ever!! He is superman! Therefore—Baylor on sock choice alone. BAYLOR

Rutgers goes into the game with a 8-4 record, while Iowa State enters at 6-6. Add in that they’ve already played – and won – a game at Yankee’s stadium and beat Pitt and it’s a no brainer. RUTGERS all the way!

AKT: I am only four degrees of separation away from Greg Schiano. Can’t bet against that. RUTGERS

ILPT: I’m picking neither of these as being cuter, but say Scarlett Knights can outrun a Cyclone. RUTGERS.

PG: I’d like to have a reason to root against the Knights, but ISU just isn’t compelling enough. RUTGERS

Sooners v Hawkeyes

ILPT: OOOOOOOOOOOO…klahoma … enjoy the musical stylings of Hugh Jackman, I love any bowl in Tempe, a party town that rivals State College. This takes me back to the 1992 Fiesta Bowl appearance and blowout when Penn State destroyed Tennessee. I was there and it was GLORIOUS.

As much as I love the Hawkeyes and support the B1G 10, I’m picking Oklahoma. Sooners aren’t cuter than Hawkeyes, but in this case, they’re faster and speed counts. OK is better than ok; they’re one of the best teams in the nation. At 9-3 this season, and 3-1 in non BCS bowls, odds are favoring the Sooners (rather than laters). OKLAHOMA

PG: Another game where my pride/spite gets the better of me. Usually I’d pick the hawkeyes every dang time against the Brian Bosworths - but not this year. OKLAHOMA.

TM: You can tell my picks are not based on who will actually win when I announce my pick. Remember folks, I was the kid who rooted for the Brewer’s (while living in Indiana) because no one ever rooted for them and I felt bad for them. So I’ll be defiant and pick IOWA.

Perhaps it's a little morbid -

but it's really special too - and somewhat the genesis of all we now do. The phrase "To the Lion" is what my dad (and his cronies) used to say after every PSU score - they'd raise their respective glass(es) and toast the team. It was the most consistent and personal PSUism that I could remember my father uttering. When Pop passed away, suddenly, in 1999, my mother and I found ourselves confronted with many decisions and choices to make in a very short time. One such choice was if we wanted any special message on his grave marker (I warned you this was morbid) - my mom looked at me and asked "Fight on State?" - I half smiled and said "To the Lion."

Since then, "To the Lion" has been my Penn State motto, moniker, etc. When PSU was selling "bricks" for the new addition to the stadium, I bought one for Dad, complete with the slogan, "To the Lion" (see photo). We have, subsequently, named our tailgate, website and blogs accordingly. Slowly, but surely, we are branding ourselves with accessories (both tailgating and apparel) sporting the slogan.

I heart Penn State

Happy Valentine's Day.

In honor of the Roman Martyr, who may or may not have been a priest, or a bishop or seven different people, only later to be romanticized by Geoffrey Chaucer, and eventually removed from the Calendar of Saints, I thought I'd list some of the things that I love about Penn State Football (my true Valentine):

1. The uniforms. Navy is such a flattering color - and an investment in a jersey is an investment for life - no worries about whose name is on the back.

2. Tailgating - (get out, really?) I love cooking, eating, and entertaining in the cow pastures. I grew up tailgating over on the East side of the stadium, so I'm a grass purest. Sure it can be convenient to be on the pavement in bad weather - but nothing, nothing, beats standing in a field, with great friends, with good food and drink, toasting the Nittany Lions, nothing.

3. Defense - it's my favorite. Offense is exciting and necessary - but the real thrill is when the Defense is on the field. I love cheering on the squad - it's also when the crowd can really get into it and try to be a factor. Tipped passes, interceptions, blocked kicks - those are the best.

4. Paul Posluszny and players of his ilk - this would include, Sean Lee, Tamba Hali, Kenny Jackson, to name just a few. The fellas that just embody the "Penn State Player" - their enthusiasm for the game and their school is contagious. Smart kids with what appear to be good hearts who truly appreciate what they are doing. These are the kids who warm (and on occasion, mend) my Penn State Heart.

5. Pre-game. I love the Blue Band - sure they can be cheesy - but they really are great and they play my favorite songs every week - I love the drum major and the "flip" - no matter how late it is in the season - I get a rush walking through the gangway into the stadium - filled with the familiar sounds of cheering fans and Penn State fight songs.

6. State College - as soon as I get on the 322 by-pass I start to smile - it's such a great little town -

7. The Penn State Way. True, right, wrong or false I love the reputation that Penn State projects (whether or not it be held by all) - The tradition of guiding young people to be the best students, athletes and members of society that they can be - and winning more than a few games along the way. This is perhaps why it stings a little more when the kids deviate from our "image" of them - but sometimes love hurts.

So that's just a quick list - there are innumerable reasons for why I love this team -

so, without much sleep -

It's impossible to know what will happen before Saturday - but here's my theory on why McQueary, Curley and Schultz still have jobs/awaiting retirement:

As I see it - there are 2 possibilities:

1. The BOT knew more than they said they did (when asked, said they had the same information as the public) and they know that more info is going to come out about Paterno's past knowledge and participation in the culture of non-reporting and it will be found that McQueary was forced to not report and testify the way he did and that Curley and Schultz were mere pawns in the situation.

2. Curley and Schultz have clauses in their contracts covering certain situations and their legal defense and PSU needs McQueary to relay the plays on Saturday.

Cynically, I think option 2 is more likely.

An Open Letter to My Dad...

Dad, I’m glad you’re not here.

This is only the second time in twelve years that I have thought that. The first time was in September, 2001.

And now, with the events unfolding at our University, although I, as I do nearly every day, selfishly wish that you were here to tell me that everything was going to be okay, I know, in my heart, that you are lucky to be spared this disappointment.

Penn State, and their glorious football team, was the thread that bound us. When I was an unruly child, or confusing adolescent, we would always come together for our Lions. I know that part of the reason I spent so much time memorizing player names, game rules and historic scores was because it seemed to please you when your “wittle girl” could act as a human stats page for your friends.

I know that there were things that we did together that weren’t Penn State related, one such thing being our faith, which has been invaluable to me - you were my favorite person on the planet, with or without PSU, but the school and the culture of Penn State is so intrenched in our past, and in my memories, that it’s difficult for me to think of one without the other.

I was so proud of you when you taught B-Log (those letters mean something different now, btw) at University Park and Altoona; I remember when you let me grade the multiple choice portions of the tests, and how much you cared about how each student was doing.

I’d make recordings of the Blue Band for your work commute, and you would joke that you almost wrecked the car when you tried to stand up during the alma mater.

Daddy, this week they are going to ask us to sing the alma mater and I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it.

You were proud to be a Penn State fan.

Sure there were times when you were frustrated and disappointed, and you were never a big fan of “game day Joe.” But your admiration and respect for Coach Paterno off the field was steadfast. He has announced his retirement - he is standing beside his players and the University - he has admitted that he wishes he had done more.

The actions and inactions and continued negative behavior of others has rocked me to my core. I know that I am not a victim in this situation, but I do feel helpless. I don’t know Pop - I just don’t know.

What I do know, is that the ideals that we were taught and believed in, even if they haven't been upheld by those who were trusted, are still true. You never got to see Adam Taliaferro play or his victory over adversity - he is still true. You never got to see how the kids camp out in tents to get tickets and how they rally around all the Penn State sports - they are still true. You never got to see how my friends and I have grown and shown as Penn Staters (tailgaters) and people - we are still true.

So Daddy, while I am glad that you haven’t had to bear the anguish of these last few days or to ache for the children who were harmed - I am glad that I do have my memories of you to reassure me that what we’ve believed all these years is true because we make it so. We Are.

We're Not in Philly Anymore; Penn State vs eastern michigan eagles

The beginning of the season has been a whirlwind - Penn State is 2-1 in Football and we're 3-0 in Tailgating.

This week we'll be serving some retro favorites, including hot turkey sandwiches, stuffing (instead of potatoes), turkey ruebens (rachels), breakfast sandwich sliders, kielbasa, assorted snacks and apple pie.

The eagles of eastern michigan are our lone green (and a rare non-red) opponent this season. The emu mascot (which, lamentably, is not an emu) is named "swoop." Hmmm, where have I heard that before?

Kick off is at 12pm (aaaarrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhh) - so the lots will be opening at 7am - We plan to be there when the open the gates; and we'll be tailgating before and after the game. We'll be back in our spots in the Purple Lot (behind the baseball stadium) and flying the Scottish flag (blue w/ white cross) - email/message/call for directions.

You look marvelous.

An Away Game at Home; Penn State v Temple

This week Penn State travels to Philadelphia to take on the Temple Owls at Lincoln Financial Field.

Living in Philadelphia makes this week unique - a Penn State away game - just across town.

Kickoff is at 12pm - and will be televised on ESPN.

According to the internets the parking lots (specifically K) open at 7am. Our plan is to be there when the lots open - and we will park - well, where ever they tell us to.

This week we will be celebrating our 9th annual Oktoberfest - so we'll be serving our favorite German, PA Dutch and Philadelphia foods.

Stop by and say hello if you're in town for the game (or locals like us) - look for our Bavarian and PSU flags.

While he repeated that his hope is to stay in Buffalo, Si.com reports that Paul Posluszny, Bills linebaker and former Penn State BMOC, will "listen" to offers from other teams once the NFL free agency period begins.

Posluszny, who was drafted in the 2nd round (steal!) by the Bills, signed a 4 year contract that ended last season.

Winning; (or as we call him) Cael Sanderson dominates another wrestling competition.

Cael Sanderson is a Champion and it's probably the best hire Penn State has made in 45, maybe 32, maybe 28 years.

Coach Paterno took over the head football coach job in 1966. By 1968 he was coaching an undefeated team. No National Championship until 1982, but he did follow up the '68 season with undefeated seasons in 1969 and 1973. Which is pretty remarkable.

Coach Russ Rose has been a stalwart asset to Penn State athletics. His contribution to women's volleyball, as a Penn State and national collegiate sport is unprecedented and unchallenged. But Coach Rose had to wait 20 long years before he coached an NCAA championship team - the years since then have been good, of course.

And Penn State has (has had) other powerhouse programs, such as fencing (Emmanuil G. Kaidanov has coached the fencing team since 1983), men's gymnastics, women's lacrosse and men's volleyball. These teams too have racked up championship titles over the years.

But Sanderson's command on the sport of wrestling is difficult to compare. At age 30 he took on the job of head coach at Penn State. And in his 2nd season his team won both the Big Ten and NCAA titles, and he did it with a team loaded with underclassmen. The Penn State wrestling program has battled and struggled over the years to compete in the Big Ten and on the National stage - the hiring of Sanderson, and his team's outstanding tournament results have propelled Penn State into the upper strata of wrestling. Everyone is going to want to wrestle at Penn State.

Interestingly, the B1G title was more hotly contested than the national title. Coach Sanderson, as part of a deal he made with his team (a la "The Rookie" - if they won the conference championship, he'd compete), participated in a "senior" regional freestyle event last weekend. True to his modus operandi, he won all three bouts by technical fall without surrendering one point in the process (?!?!?).

It's old news, but worth repeating: Sanderson was undefeated in collegiate wrestling, winning 4 NCAA titles; a feat that Sports Illustrated lists as the 2nd greatest (behind only Jesse Owens) accomplishment in college sports, ever. He also owns an Olympic gold medal. He's the best and now he's a Penn Stater and that's a great thing.

Suffice to say, when Charlie Sheen looks up "winning" in the dictionary, he sees a picture of Cael Sanderson.

Penn State has some of the best coaches in college sports - past, present and (hopefully) future. They've invested a lot of time and faith in their most decorated coaches - and now they've invested some money in the wrestling program, with an amazing return.

Cael Sanderson is the best. Russ Rose is the best. Joe Paterno is the best (or, at least the winningest). Penn State Athletics needs to show the same commitment to excellence when filling all of their coaching positions.

I try to not be cynical, but I am.

This week PSU announced that they will be converting current animal pastures into recreation fields. Incurring an expense of some $2.97M (during a budget crisis).

So one has to think, will students be excited to trek out to the fields after dropping off their (possibly) 30% higher tuition check at Shields Building?

The fields that they will be converting include the lots where Brown preferred and the new(ish) Reserved Pink (overflow) parking are located.

The improvements include grading, irrigation and, so the kids can play ultimate frisbee after dark, lighting.

How convenient.

I'm still thrilled with the Nittany Lions' big Wrestling win, coup really, this past weekend.

Iowa had a 3 year vice grip on the title and PSU really stormed through the competition this year.

The title is Penn State's 21st NCAA Championship since joining the Big Ten (full season 1993 - 94), which puts them way out in front of the other Big Ten Schools. Iowa and Minnesota are tied at 2nd with 9 each.

Penn State's 21 titles include 10 Fencing and 5 Women's Volleyball titles - but a championship is a championship.
